Camels’ strange courtship display

--

When thinking about strange courtship displays in the animal kingdom, the thought always goes to that of the peacocks, but it turns out that evolution came up with even weirder ways to achieve the same goal in other species.

Camels and dromedaries’ displays are arguably stranger. During heat period, males emits a pigment from a gland that serves to attract females. The male camel also has an inflatable structure of the soft palate called “dulla”, an organ with the appearance of a large pink tongue.

The camel is known to bring that out of its mouth when seeking to court a female camel, or to assert their dominance over other males.
