The image below depict the phenomenon called the king of rats:
It is disturbing to see, the explanation is the following: probably rats that are social animals huddle close to each other to sleep in winter, if they have dirty and sticky tails it may happen that in the cold they get stuck to each other and the rats wriggling to free themselves knot their tails together making the situation worse by making it impossible to move, and this leads to the death of the rodents.
The phenomenon occurs mostly with rats, sometimes with mice, and it has also been found in squirrels.
