What are some peculiarities of fungi?

They have been used to cure deadly viruses and are the basis of antibiotics (most notably penicillin).

They are able to absorb hydrocarbons from oil and polyurethane plastic, and heavy metals such as mercury. There is a species of fungus in the area surrounding Chernobyl that is also radiotrophic, i.e. able to feed on radiation. They are therefore capable of reducing pollution and purifying radioactive areas.

About 300 species of mushrooms are poisonous to humans. And if they were ever to be genetically modified or evolve to become larger and more invasive, they could even once again dominate the Earth by replacing plants, as was the case several hundred million years ago, provided they adapt to today’s atmosphere, since they breathe oxygen and expel CO2.

Protoxities, ancient giant fungi, became extinct not only because of competition with vascular plants, but also because they could not grow faster than the animals that ate them.
