What if we dumped our trash into the Mariana Trench?
The Mariana Trench is a full 11 kilometers deep and in it, we could technically dump trash for centuries, if not thousands of years.
The enormous pressure would also compact it and enable even more trash to be contained within it.
Its size would be more than enough, but the real reason it is a stupid idea is that it would pollute the sea with more heavy metals, dangerous chemicals and microplastics.
Over time, organic matter at plate temperatures would be mineralized while inorganic matter would be greatly diluted.
Finally, after several million years, the junk would end up in the upper mantle by subduction of the Pacific plate under the Philippine plate.
