What special characteristics does the shoebill possess?

--

The shoebill, a bird related to the more common pelicans living in East Africa, appears to project its own spine out of its mouth when yawning.

This is because when they open their jaws wide, their gular skin (the flexible membrane found in many birds’ throats) pushes against the spine, giving the impression that it is actually protruding from their mouths.
