What would happen if the Earth’s deserts could be turned into grasslands ?
If all deserts were converted into grasslands, the consequences for the planet’s entire ecosystem could be catastrophic.
For example, according to a study conducted by NASA, dust from the Sahara Desert is carried by winds across the Atlantic Ocean to the Amazon rainforest, depositing important minerals such as phosphorus, which are essential for the forest. These minerals from the Sahara Desert replenish minerals lost through rains and floods in the Amazon. This way, the largest desert on Earth is the source of life for the largest forest on the planet!
Sahara Desert dust feeds the Amazon rainforest.
If the Sahara Desert was converted to grassland, the Amazon rainforest would lose its source of nutrients and minerals and most likely wither and die.
Deserts are like recycling machines for the planet, as the mineral-rich soil underneath is brought to the surface and then dispersed around the planet through the winds.
It is therefore not a good idea to convert all deserts to green lands, because deserts are a critical part of the ecosystem, just as much as forests.
